Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, it’s finally here! The off-season is over and we have officially kicked off the 2016/2017 season. Opening night for your San Jose State Spartans was held on Thursday night the 22nd of September as they squared off against their so-cal rival, the USC Trojans.
Starting in net this season is goaltender Eddie Berlin. Eddie is taking over for the departed “Super” Mario Retana and looks to make a name of his own as the “Berlin Wall.” Both teams have added some players and are boasting more depth .
USC started off the scoring with 8:51 to go in the first period. The Spartans bounced back after the intermission when Keanu Deguchi, a.ka. “Gooch” or “Gucci,” tied the game eight minutes into the second period with a power-play goal, his first of the season. The celebration wasn’t long-lived though as the Trojans once again took the lead less than two minutes later. Fortunately, the Spartans managed to fight back and score another power-play goal before the period ended. This time it was forward Schuyler Krawczuk making the tally and sending the teams to the dressing rooms tied at 2-2.
The third period was well battled by both teams and featured some heavy hitting. The Spartans started off strong and scored the first goal of the period when defenseman Brandon Hirschel, or “Hershey”, netted his first goal of his Spartan career. Midway through the period USC tied the game, after no scoring the rest of the third, both teams braced for overtime.
The overtime frame featured no scoring and no heroics. The game was well contested and resulted in a 3-3 tie. The Spartans will now prepare for their next set of games starting with Santa Clara on Friday night, followed by back-to-back home games with CSU-Northridge on Saturday and Sunday.
